Frequently Asked Questions

  • PLUM is Peckham's first equipment-based boutique Pilates studio, where we offer mainly reformer and tower group classes (maximum of 10 beds). We are dedicated to making our community feel their very best selves. We value mindful, controlled movements in a welcoming, non-judgmental environment. Founded by a passionate Pilates Instructor, the PLUM Method is designed to make you FEEL YOUR VERY BEST. We care about your body and want to help you push your limits. The PLUM method is rooted in the original classical Pilates method, guided by sports science and infused with modern movement innovations. We like to have fun and share our passion for the transformative powers of Pilates!

  • Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1930s and originally called “Contrology”, Pilates is an exercise method thoughtfully designed to increase muscle strength and endurance, improve flexibility, posture and balance through mindful engagement of the Powerhouse (centre of the body). The basis of the exercises are rooted in the 6 core Pilates principles of Precision, Flow, Control, Breathing, Concentration and Centre. Aside from the immense physical benefits, a consistent Pilates practice greatly improves overall wellbeing and state of mind.

At PLUM, you can expect to receive hands-on correction (unless you tell us otherwise) and clear instructions so that you can make strength gains throughout your entire body. PLUM is dedicated to continued education of our Instructors, so we can deliver premium, innovative Pilates classes to our community.

  • Reformer Pilates is the most popular pilates equipment; it uses a sliding carriage with varying spring tensions for resistance. The Tower apparatus uses a fixed vertical frame with springs and straps attached to the frame. Reformer focuses on dynamic movement and core strength, while Tower emphasises flexibility, spinal alignment, and targeted muscle isolation. If you’ve done any mat or reformer classes, you’ll see some familiar exercises using the Tower. A full-body workout is what you’ll get with both types of classes.

  • There are numerous physical and mental benefits of a consistent Pilates practice. Some of these include:-

    • Reduced chronic back pain

    • Leaner, stronger muscles

    • Improved posture & flexibility

    • Core strength & stability

    • Improved balance & coordination

    • Increased self-confidence

    • Improved mind-body awareness

    • Better…”activities”😉

  • There’s no such thing as too much Pilates! Realistically though, life gets in the way and we don’t always find the time to put our physical health first. Come to PLUM as often you’re able to commit to. If you want to FEEL and SEE results in the form of lean, stronger muscles, heightened mind-body awareness, alignment and balance, practicing up to 3-5 times a week is ideal. Whether you’re a dedicated gym-goer, CrossFitter, cyclist, runner or yogi, slotting in regular Pilates sessions in your week will heighten your other movement practices. Remember that the choices you make outside of your 55-minute classes also count towards your goals and wellbeing. A healthy diet and effective stress-management, for example, impact the body, so keep that in mind.

  • What’s unique and special about Pilates is the vast number of modifications and progressions for every body type, age and gender; a truly skilled Pilates Instructor will never make you feel left out, insecure or incapable.
