PLUM postnatal Pilates class for mums and babies

Postnatal

Our intelligently-designed postnatal classes focus on rebuilding abdominal, pelvic floor and glute strength, while improving posture and helping you feel stronger, more balanced and confident in your body.

  • 45-minute sessions
  • Highly trained teachers across Tower and Reformer
  • A studio assistant on hand to help with babies

Small classes of no more than 9 mums (and their bubs) create an intimate, judgement-free space to move, reconnect and meet other mums.

The Equipment

Reformer, Tower or Chair – what's the difference?

Reformer

Reformer is the most familiar piece of Pilates equipment, a sliding carriage with adjustable spring tension that builds dynamic movement and core strength.

Tower

Tower uses a fixed vertical frame with springs and straps, working more on flexibility, spinal alignment and mobility, with targeted muscle isolation. If you've done mat or reformer work before, you'll recognise plenty on the Tower too.

Chair

Chair is the smallest apparatus in the room and the most deceptive. The Wunda Chair uses a compact spring-loaded pedal to build strength and control in a much smaller range of motion, which means nowhere to hide. It reaches stabilising muscles the Reformer doesn't touch, and it's a favourite with members looking to level up once the basics feel easy.

All three give you a full body workout. The more time you spend across them, the more your practice deepens, the stronger you become!

What is Pilates?

Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1930s and originally called "Contrology", Pilates is an exercise method designed to increase muscle strength and endurance, improve flexibility, posture and balance through mindful engagement of the Powerhouse, the centre of the body. It's rooted in six core principles: Precision, Flow, Control, Breathing, Concentration and Centre.

At PLUM, expect hands-on correction (unless you tell us otherwise) and clear instruction, so you can make strength gains throughout your entire body.

I don't feel confident in my body, is Pilates right for my body type?

A Pilates body is a body that does Pilates. Pilates offers a huge number of modifications and progressions for every body type, age and gender, a truly skilled instructor will never make you feel left out, insecure or incapable. We also have private sessions available if a 1:1 experience is your preference.

Reformer uses a sliding carriage with varying spring tensions, focused on dynamic movement and core strength. Tower uses a fixed vertical frame with springs and straps, emphasising flexibility, spinal alignment, mobility and targeted muscle isolation. Both give you a full body workout.

Pregnant, can I still attend?

Let reception and your instructor know as soon as you can. Not every instructor is prenatally trained, so tell us if you'd prefer to be guided by one who is and we'll point you to the right sessions.

Up to 14 weeks, nothing changes, exercise as normal for you (do check with your GP if you're trying Reformer for the first time). Up to 27 weeks, it's best to avoid Power, Tower and Bounce, Primer and PLUM Mum sessions are still fine [class name pending confirmation, see Section 2]. From 28 weeks, we'd recommend PLUM Mum or Primer sessions, and private sessions are always available if you'd prefer a tailored approach.
